The Armadillo Lizard (Cordylus cataphractus) is a spiny-tailed lizard endemic to desert areas of southern Africa. It is also known as the "Typical Gridled Lizard", Armadillo Girdled Lizard or the Armadillo Spiny-tailed Lizard. They can be a light brown to dark brown in coloration depending on the subspecies, and are sometimes referred to with the common name of golden armadillo lizard. The underbelly is yellow with a blackish pattern, especially under the chin.This lizard has a distinctive defensive posture, in which it grabs its tail and curls into a ring. Its size ranges from 16 to 21 cm (61/2 to 81/2 in) in length. In South Africa, trade in Armadillo Lizards is illegal. This lizard is very difficult to find for sale in the pet trade for this reason. However, due to breeding, they are becoming more and more available in the pet trades of North America and Europe.

They occur in scrub and rocky outcrops and hide in large cracks and crevices when hibernating for the winter. They live in family groups and the female gives birth to 2-4 live young. The female may even feed her young, which is unusual for a lizard in that they rarely demonstrate parental care. In what we imagine might be the most Jalopnik build ever undertaken, Ken designed and fabricated his own tig-welded frame, installed a thoroughly massaged 351 cubic inch V8 with a ZF-25 5-speed transmission, hand-formed the aluminum body over a meticulously measured and accurate body form, and finished it all off in a beautiful metallic gray.
It took Ken 10 years to complete the project...

Ken went into the project fully aware of the problem of a getting the car out of his basement - it was your classic ship-in-a-bottle project problem. When the faux Lambo was complete, he actually hired a contractor to knock out a part of the basement wall, build an earthen ramp, and then drag the car out of its subterranean workshop.

BMW 600 Micro From 1958

The BMW 600 was a small car produced by BMW from the summer of 1957 until November 1959. It was a four-seat car partially based on the BMW Isetta two-seater, with more power, a longer wheelbase, a back door, and a more conventional four-wheel configuration.

The front end of the 600 was similar to the Isetta's, but the 600's wheelbase was stretched to accommodate four seats. A single side door was included on the right side for rear seat access. The Isetta's A-shaped tubular chassis was replaced by a more conventional perimeter frame using box-section side members and tubular crossmembers. BMW used a semi-trailing arm independent suspension for the first time on the 600. This suspension would be used on almost every new model for the next four decades. Because of extra size and weight, the 600 had a more powerful engine than the Isetta. The 600 had the 582 cc flat twin engine from the R67 motorcycle but used an H pattern transaxle instead of the R67 sequential transmission without differential. The engine was rated at 19.5 hp (15 kW) and accelerated the 600 to a top speed of 103 km/h (64 mph). The car had no fuel level gauge but had two fuel taps, one lower in the tank than the other to be used as a reserve when fuel starvation with the higher tap is felt.

In three years only 34,813 BMW 600s were produced, partly due to price competition with the entry-level VW Beetle. In the late 1950s consumers wanted cars that looked like cars, and they had lost interest in economy models. Sales of the 600 were, however, aided by the energy crisis of 1956-1957.

The 600 was replaced by the BMW 700 in 1959.

'These life-size illusions allow me to communicate with a very large audience.

'It seems almost universal that people take delight in being visually tricked.'

Pugh is currently working on a mural for a police station in California and also one for a recreation centre in Calgary, Canada.

Beautiful Buddhist Sand Art

Tibetan Buddhist sand paintings are usually made of mandalas. In Tibetan, it is called dul-tson-kyil-khor ("mandala of colored powders").

The sand is carefully placed on a large, flat table. The construction process takes several days, and the mandala is destroyed shortly after its completion. This is done as a teaching tool and metaphor for the 'impermanence' (Pali: anicca) of all contingent and compounded phenomena (Sanskrit: Prati-tya-samutpa-da).

The mandala sand painting process begins with an opening ceremony, during which the lamas, or Tibetan priests, consecrate the site and call forth the forces of goodness. This is done by means of chanting, intention, mudra, asana, pranayama, visualisation, music and mantra recitation, etc.

On the first day, the lamas begin by drawing an outline of the mandala to be painted on a wooden platform. The following days see the laying of the colored sands, which is effected by pouring the sand from traditional metal funnels called chak-pur. Each monk holds a chak-pur in one hand, while running a metal rod on its serrated surface; the vibration causes the sands to flow like liquid.

Formed of a traditional prescribed iconography that includes geometric shapes and a multitude of ancient spiritual symbols (e.g.: Ashtamangala and divine attributes of yidam), seed syllables, mantra, the sand-painted mandala is used as a tool or instrument for innumerable purposes, amongst which re-consecrating the earth and its inhabitants is elementary.

Italian artist Maurizio Savini has distinguished himself by using a very unusual material for his sculptures: pink chewing gum. Here are some of his works.

Over the last 10 years Italian artist Maurizio Savini has been creating a series of sculptures using thousands of pieces of chewing gum. The life size sculptures include a buffalo, a grizzly bear and suited businessmen suspended in gymnastic poses. His works have been exhibited internationally and some of his pieces have sold for approximately 55 000USD. They have recently been shown at testori UK gallery, London.

Chewing-gum, as a matter of fact known in Italian also as “ American gum “, was introduced by American soldiers with the end of World war two together with jeans, nylon, stocking and boggie-woggie. Its association with a state of euphoria of change and carefree youthfulness some how carried on in the following decades. Also for those born in the sixties as Maurizio Savini and I, chewing-gum reaches in the mind ‘s meanders at a tie with childhood and adolescence, and a light pressure of a future still to be built and dreamt and the slaughterhouse of personal and collective memories of the past which is gone, no one knows where when and with whom.

The sensual act of chewing, the voluptuous warmth of rebelling saliva, the artificial and secretly aseptic fragrance which spreads from the mouth as a promise and missed kiss. The synthetic fleshliness of the pink color, the obsessive square shape of the product unwrapped and ready to be shred to pieces by the power of the tongue, all compete in crashing on the senses. Applying all this to the power and energy of the Sculpture and its history causes a short circuit having the capacity of turning the ludic into stately and vice versa. The strict minimalism of parallelepiped is subverted by the uniform coating with many bars of chewing-gum completely cover it, rendering chewable to desire, soft and provoking to forbidden touch, what was abstract and distant.

For some people a middle name must be more than meets the eye, case in point - Jason Burrows. His middle name of Michael just wasn't cutting it, so he took legal action and changed his name to something with a bit more power and pizazz - Megatron!

Burrows, who works as the Assistant Imaging Director for 96.5 Jack-FM here at CBS Radio in Seattle, as well as troops as a 501st Legion member in the Titan Garrison under the designation TK-757, decided to change his middle name to Megatron for a variety of reasons, all stemming from a conversation about tomatoes as he explains below.

Why did you decide to change your middle name from Michael to Megatron?
The decision to change my name came after a long discussion that a few of my friends and I had about middle names, Burrows explains. "My ex-girlfriend's brother changed his middle name from Bernard to Tomato when he was in high school. Bernard was a family name that he really didn't care for, and he had been called Tomato on his high school sports teams for years, so he asked his mom for permission and made it happen.

After that conversation, we all talked about what I could change my middle name to, since Michael was so "ordinary". With all the excitement that my friends and I had about the Transformers movie coming out and Megatron being my favorite character from that universe, it was an easy choice. I also liked the fact that my middle initial wouldn't change, so my banking and financial paperwork could stay the same. I can still maintain the "professional" Jason M. Burrows, while having the fun of a totally unique name. At first, the whole thing was all theoretical, but after researching the cost and process, I decided to go for it.

What was the legal process like?
The legal process was surprisingly easy. The hardest part about it was gathering the $100 for all the court fees. I didn't have the extra hundred laying around, so my friend Adam suggested that I ask for donations. On a whim, I posted the story on my Livejournal page with a PayPal donate button, and my friends answered the call! My friend Deven donated the initial $20, then suggested that I have people sponsor a letter after that, so each letter of Megatron is "owned" by a different friend!

Once I had the cash in hand, I chose to go to the court July 2 since the movie was opening at 8pm that evening. I filled out the paperwork, turned it in with the filing fees to the clerk and was told to be back at the courthouse at 1:30pm to go before the judge. I agreed and showed up to Judge Eilleen Kato's courtroom. She came in and said that she'd be hearing name changes first. The first lady got up and changed her last name to honor her birth family. Next, a family went up, and the mom and dad both said that their daughter would like her name changed to Jessica, so the judge signed that order. I was third on the list. I walked to the front, where she had me raise my right hand to swear that I would tell the truth, whole truth and nothing but the truth. She asked if my name change was to defraud creditors, I said no. She asked if it would be detrimental to anyone else, I said no. She then asked if I was indeed changing my middle name to that of my childhood hero, I smiled and said, '"Yes Ma'am." She said, 'Then I do order and decree that your name be changed from Jason Michael Burrows to Jason Megatron Burrows" with a huge grin. There were quite a few chuckles from the courtroom. I was handed the paperwork and headed back to work.

Did you face opposition from your family?
I actually haven't told my parents about the change yet! My sister thinks I'm nuts, but she's getting a kick out of how much fun I'm having with it. She's due with her second kid in September and I've been sending her a bunch of name ideas. After I informed her of the name change, she told me not to bother sending Transformer names.

Did you friends and family think it was pretty cool?
Most of my friends'love the fact that I changed my name. I've only received a few weird looks, but for the most part everyone thinks it's pretty cool.

How do you think the name change will affect how people see you?
I don't believe it will affect how people view me. I think that most people won't ever know, since I don't regularly use my middle name. The people that are close to me know and they like it, so that's good enough for me. A few people have said that they'd be interested to see what future employers think when they look at my resume, but I figure if you don't have a big enough sense of humor to find the fun in my name, I probably don't want to work for you anyway.

Do you feel more powerful now?
That's a good question. I think I'd have to say yes, I do feel more powerful. Now, once I install the fusion cannon on my arm, I'll be set. *laugh*

Gun, Tank, T-Rex or Jet - which is the best Megatron and why?
The Generation 1 version of Megatron will always be my favorite. The gun all the way. One of my favorite memories as a kid was flying into Reno with my grandparents after returning from the Philippines. I had my original G1 Megatron in the gun form in my carry-on bag and got stopped by security. I ended up having to put him in a cardboard box and check him as luggage.

If there was a Transformers-Star Wars crossover, how well would Megs work with the Empire?
Ooh, Transformers-Star Wars crossover that's tricky. I think that the Decepticons would work well with the Empire to start, but the power struggle between Vader and Megatron would end up working against them, leading to the Rebel/Autobot victory - unfortunately.

Any advice to fans who want to go about legally changing their name to their favorite character?
My advice to fans who want to change your name would be - if you really want to do it, put on your Internet flame-retardant armor and go for it. And ignore what people say on forums. I-ve been called a lot of names since people found out, but in the end I'm happy with my decision and that's much more important to me than what other people think.

He graduated from high school in Frankfurt, Germany. At the age of twenty, Brom started working full-time as a commercial illustrator. By twenty-one, he had two national art representatives and was doing work for such clients as Coca-Cola, IBM, Columbia Pictures and CNN. TSR, Inc. hired Brom on full-time at the age of 24, where his paintings have been published in the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing games (specifically in Forgotten Realms and Dark Sun) and on collectible card games such as Wizards of the Coast's Magic: The Gathering.

In 1994, after four years at TSR, Brom returned to the freelance market where he has since worked as a movie concept artist, and created illustrations for comics (by DC, Chaos, Dark Horse) and computer games (for iD, Blizzard, Sega and Activision). Brom has also been active with a line of Brom fetish toys from Fewture and a series of bronzes from the Franklin Mint and paintings for novels (by Michael Moorcock, Terry Brooks, R.A. Salvatore, Edgar Rice Burroughs). He has also returned to painting for book covers for TSR's successor Wizards of the Coast, including the covers for the War of the Spider Queen series and reprints of The Avatar Series.

Brom currently resides with his wife and two sons in the Seattle, Washington area.
